Memos and destination tags

Why an address sometimes needs an additional identifier.

UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALSA little learning. More confidence.

An address may serve several accounts

Some wallets and custodial services use a common blockchain address for many users. A memo, destination tag, or extra identifier tells the receiving service which account to credit.

The network may accept a transfer to the address even when the service cannot identify its intended recipient. A missing tag can therefore cause a difficult recovery problem.

Copy both values from the wallet

If the receiving screen provides an address and a tag, copy both. Preserve leading characters and do not invent a value. If the receiving wallet explicitly does not require a memo, follow the instructions shown by the exchange provider.

The local form displays an extra-ID field for supported assets that may require one. It validates the provided details before creating an order.

Check before submitting

Review the address, network, and tag together in the final order details. If a receiving service’s instructions are unclear, resolve that question before sending funds. The local demo provides a way to practice this review without a transfer.
